Short answer: Partly, in two steps. 2K's Server Sunset notice says NBA 2K25 is "discontinued as of December 31, 2026." The game comes off sale earlier, on Oct. 30, 2026. Starting Jan. 1, 2027, everything that needs 2K's servers stops working. The offline modes stay.
2K opened the notice with "There's the final buzzer." The rest of it reads like terms and conditions.
The dates
- Oct. 30, 2026: NBA 2K25 is no longer available for purchase. If you already own it, you can still redownload it.
- Dec. 31, 2026: The game is discontinued.
- Jan. 1, 2027: Multiplayer and every online mode go dark.
2K first posted the notice on Sept. 3 and updated it Oct. 2. It got wide attention this week, which is why you're hearing about it now.

The fine print matters here. Any feature inside those surviving modes that "requires a connection to 2K servers" will also stop working. Your offline franchise keeps running, but anything it pulls from 2K's servers won't.
Reader questions
Can I play MyCAREER offline after the shutdown? No. 2K lists MyCAREER with the online modes that go away, and the notice doesn't mention an offline version.
What happens to my VC? 2K says you won't be able to earn VC after the shutdown. The notice doesn't mention refunds for VC you haven't spent, and the two main places to spend it, MyCAREER and MyTEAM, are shutting down too. If you have a balance, spend it before Dec. 31.
Should I buy NBA 2K25 now? Steam still listed it at $69.99 on Oct. 7. That buys you about two months of online play, then a permanently offline basketball game. Price it accordingly.
Is anyone still playing? Yes. The Steam API showed 3,052 people playing at 5:26 AM MST today. That is one snapshot from early morning in the US, and it doesn't include console players. The game still has customers. It also has at least one newer edition on sale.
Why now
This is how sports games work. Each NBA 2K launches in September, the next one replaces it a year later, and 2K eventually turns off the old servers. NBA 2K25 came out on Steam on Sept. 3, 2024, from developer Visual Concepts. Roughly two years of online support is a familiar pattern for the series.
